“Save the Independent Bookstore” 50/50 Short Story Writing Contest

Sponsored by EVERYbody Reads and Writing at the Ledges

All stories (fiction or non-fiction) must have something to do with an independent bookstore. Essentially, we are looking for any story/plot line that will make people aware of the importance of the local, small town, family-owned bookstore.

Examples:

  • A story set in an independent bookstore
  • The characters visit a small town bookstore
  • The character works at a family-owned bookstore
  • Characters discuss the plight of the indie bookstore

Entry Fee: $10 per story

For every $10 entry fee received - $5 will go into the “winner’s pot” (see below)
The remainder ($4.41, less $0.59 PayPal fee) will go to the following charity:
The Capital Area Literacy Coalition - http://thereadingpeople.org/
Maximum word count: 1111 words (not including the title or author’s name)

In the beginning, we will offer a first prize of $50. Once we reach $50 in entry fees, every entry raises the pot by $5. When the winner’s pot reaches $150, we will offer another prize! Our hope is to have a $150 first prize, $100 second prize, and $50 third prize. The more people who enter, the more prize money we collect, and the more winners we will have.

Winner(s) will receive:

  • Prize Money (First prize is $50 minimum, $150 maximum)
  • Inclusion in Voices from the Ledges, the upcoming anthology by Writing at the Ledges (estimated release date December 2012)
  • One free copy of Voices from the Ledges (approximate value: $12.99)
  • An invitation to read the winning piece at the winners’ party at EVERYbody Reads (or Gone Wired Cafe- location TBA)
